Personal accountability.  It seems in the last few years, personal accountability has become virtually nonexistent.  We see it on a daily basis, occurring on all levels, from politicians to parents.  Its always somebody else's fault, and the proverbial buck continues to be passed down the line.

Sadly, that lack of accountability can be found in proposals regarding animal control.  We live in a society that sometimes blames dogs for actions that could have been and should have been easily prevented by dog owners.  Dog ownership is a responsibility. and dog owners must be accountable for the actions of their dogs.  When they are not, innocent dogs and responsible dog owners often pay the price for the actions (or lack thereof) of one person.

Resolution 2010 is a call to action to get involved in making changes in your community and the community of others.  Its about making a difference BEFORE an incident occurs.  Its a call to educate dog owners on responsible dog ownership, and to bring about laws that hold irresponsible dog owners accountable for the actions of their dogs, and to judge dog as as individuals, based on their individual behaviors. It is a personal promise that you make to yourself to work toward a better environment for people and dogs alike.

There are many ways to make a difference:  first and foremost, lead by example.  Be a responsible dog owner.  Contact your local animal shelter and help them put together a responsible dog ownership class.  Talk to your local officials about implementing or amending their current animal control ordinance to bring about stronger penalties for irresponsible dog ownership.  Join or start a responsible dog owners group, and work together on bringing about change in your community.  Keep track and take action when adverse legislation is proposed -- not only where you live, but anytime it comes up

Don't wait until an incident occurs in your community.  Get involved now to make a positive change for the future!  To learn more, please visit our sister site,  www.defendingdog.com, to better understand breed specific legislation, how it affects you, and how you can make it a thing of the past.

Resolution 2010.  Make this a promise you keep ... make 2010 the year you get involved and make a difference!
